The euphoria surrounding a big name deal can sometimes overshadow the deal itself. Occasionally a team will mortgage its future to make a big splash, though no one in Guayaquil was worried about that today as the club finalized terms with Ulises Quintero.
Quintero will earn $2,500,000 per year over 3 years.
So far this year Quintero has made 51 relief appearances with 1 save, thrown 53.1 innings and struck out 40 with a 1-1 record.

After his 7-0 shutout win against the Quakes, Van Gaskin said, "I went out there to try and eat up innings and help out our bullpen. I felt I had my good stuff... and it turned out my command was solid and my breaking balls were good."
They were better than good as the Tigrillos pitcher put up 7 strikeouts, surrendered 1 walk, allowed 3 hits and kept the bullpen phone quiet all day long.
In 2011 Gaskin has compiled a 22-6 mark with a 2.03 ERA.

It took the Guayaquil team doctor a while to realize it, but center fielder Gerardo Vinyals won't simply play through a fractured jaw after he got hurt making a defensive play in today's Mosquitos-Tigrillos game. At first, it looked like Vinyals might be back as early as tomorrow, but now the prognosis isn't quite so good; he's expected to miss at least 7 weeks. A spokesman for the club described the loss of Vinyals as a blow, but was confident that he'd be back soon.
So far this season Vinyals is hitting .282 with 21 home runs, 60 RBIs and 101 runs scored. He has 143 hits in 507 at-bats and a .401 OBP.
