It is the offseason in baseball. The diamonds and the stadiums are void of activity, but the front offices are bristling with energy. Good teams want to stay good -- bad teams want to get good -- and all teams want to get better. So get ready for the ecstasy of a superstar savior's signing, the joy of re-signing a valuable performer, but also the heartbreak of losing a bidding war or saying farewell to that retiring vet. The Rio de Janeiro Panthers concluded the season in grand fashion -- they won the Western Hemisphere Baseball League Americas Cup. They nailed it down at Teflon Field by whipping the Las Vegas Aliens 9-8 to win it all. They took the series 5-4.
Their motto for the season was "Win or Die Trying".
"They never let up and they never stopped trying the whole season," the Panthers manager proudly told reporters. "They hustled and fought the whole season and it continued in the playoffs. They are a very special bunch of guys."
To get their 1st league crown, the Panthers finished up the regular season in the South American Southern Division with a 117-45 record, ending up in first place in the division standings. |  | Monday, October 24th, 2011: RF Tobei and Lima Come to Terms on Extension The latest news from the SION reporters following the Lima Toros is that an agreement has been reached with Otto Tobei to continue as their right fielder for another 4 years.
